Many college graduates think that the knowledge they obtained in college has not prepared them for the workplace they need. This disturbing trend goes all the way to high school graduates, which donít see college as the right way to get necessary skills in order to stand their ground on todayís competitive job market.

Disturbing statistics

Recent studies show that more than 30 percent of college graduates in the U.S. are either underemployed or work in the field that is not related to their degree. Moreover, the information on student loan debt is causing some concerns as well. In 2013 the debt accounted for $1 trillion. All this red flags make college even more unreliable source of getting education and staying out of debts.

It is a known fact that college is not the key to success but it is still one of the best ways to get a good job and earn more. Letís discuss what steps high school graduates can take to be competitive after graduation from college. The reason for early preparation is that success starts before entering college. The article proposes guidelines which will make your choice of college much easier.

Choose your degree

As statistics shows, half of all students tend to change their major while being in college. The reasons for this decision are the following: they simply donít like the major they have chosen before entering college or they think this major wonít allow them to get a high-paying job. More than 70 percent of students in entering colleges in the U.S. did not pick up a major. This translates into more time in college which in turn costs more money as the prices go up every year.

Think about your future major. Decide what you want to do upon graduation. If you have a clear plan about your major, stick with it. On the other hand, if you have not decided what you want, it might be a better idea to postpone entering college and find work after high school. This way youíll get more time think as well as earn some money for your studies.

Follow your effort

Many people follow their interests in college. Itís good when you have a job that you like. On the other hand, you have many passions you want to follow. No one can guarantee that your passion will transform into success with time. Focus on the profession, in which you put your best efforts. When you spend lots of time on doing something, you get better skills and therefore better position on the job market.

Get out of debt

It is difficult to reduce your debts in college. But it is possible. Choose a college that is not far from you and live with your parents. You wonít have to spend money on rent. Try to buy used books instead of new ones. They are still good for learning and there is no difference between them. If you need, find a part time work but be sure it wonít interfere much with your studies. Upon graduation, you wonít have a mount of debts and start earning for the future.
